Who is the article about and where? For example, is the article about Guatemalan migrants in Mexico? Is it about tattoo artists in Minnesota? This section should be no more than one paragraph. And offer a descriiption of the setting of the article that includes who, where, and when.
What is the topic of the article? What is the main idea/argument of the article? For example, is the article about sex workers and the risks they face in an illegal economy? This section should be no more than two paragraphs and clearly explain the topic and central point made in the article. It should include the statement: “The main argument of this article is…”
Why is this article important given the topic? What does it tell us about the topic and what significance does it have for understanding the issue? Does it tell us something new about the issue? Does it challenge the way we normally think about an issue? This section should be in your own words and communicate what you think the value of the article is. Tell me what value you find in the article even if you don’t agree with its conclusion. The point is to give the author the most charitable reading and say what their work offers us as people interested in this issue. Make sure you explain your ideas clearly. Don’t just tell me that the article tells us something new about race; tell me what it says about race that is new and why this new understanding is important. Explain yourself as thoroughly and clearly as possible. This section should be no more than two paragraphs.
